Manchester United sign Javier Hernandez

Manchester United have announced the signing of the young striker Javier Hernández from Chivas Guadalajara, unique in the sense that it is the first time the Man United have acquired a player from Mexico.

As part of the deal, which will not become official until July 1, Manchester United said it would play the opening match at the new 45,000-seat Chivas stadium in July, and tacitly confirmed earlier reports that it would also play matches in its first summer tour of the United States since 2004. Other terms of the transfer deal were not disclosed.

Hernández, 21, still must obtain a British work permit, which has often proved to be a dicey proposition for players. He is expected to be an important part of Mexico’s team during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which begins on June 11. Hernández is also the leading scorer in the Mexican league, with 10 goals for Chivas in 13 games.
